Since 2011, the Wirrpanda Foundation to develop the Wickham Wirra Club Homework Centre, supporting the delivery of the highly sought after reward, recognition and mentoring program for primary aged students in Wickham.
The Wickham Wirra Club Homework Centre operates four afternoons a week from 2:45pm to 4:30pm. The mentors provide homework assistance to approximately 30 students and a healthy afternoon snack. This program is an effective strategy used by schools to improve school attendance and to reward good behaviour. We put emphasis on building family and community capacity, developing and strengthening family and school relationships and delivering sessions aimed at improving self-esteem, confidence, education and leadership within the parent network.
Wirrpanda Foundation employs locally identified role models with a focus on local Indigenous people living in the community and works collaboratively with key community based organisations.
Results to date include:
- Improved literacy and numeracy results for participants;
- Improvement of behaviour and completion of school work;
- Increased places available for students due to expansion of programme and space available; and
- Additional funds leveraged to provide further opportunities for students.
