The Onslow Family Support Program recently won the Onslow Chamber of Commerce and Industry People’s Choice Award.
The program was nominated by the Onslow community, and as stated by the award description, aims to recognize an organization, “that delivers outstanding service and makes a positive contribution to the local community.”
Program coordinator Suzanne Wilson believes the family support model mentors operate within is what differentiates them from other community organisations. The priority of the Onslow Family Support Program is improving school attendance and capacity in parents and caregivers. Parents/guardians are supported on an individual basis to overcome barriers to help their children attend school.
Principal of Onslow Primary School Jackie Barry recalls the positive impact of the program saying, “they had to go and wake the parents and kids up to now where the kids are dressed and at the door waiting for them.” Mentors also provide workshops covering physical and mental health, as well as run sporting and cultural activities. The program builds self-confidence and instils the value of education for participants and to receive the People’s Choice Award from the Onslow community is recognition of its success.
Our Onslow Family Support program is made possible by the National Indigenous Australians Agency and BHP.
