Our “Waalitj Schools” Education, Engagement, and Attainment Initiative is a community-focused program run in partnership with Wiluna Remote Community School in the Mid-West town of Wiluna.

Learning Through Community
Local mentors work with the community and local services to provide support to overcome any barriers that may prevent children from regular school attendance. Intensive mentoring is provided to families and covers support for establishing routines, school pick-ups, dealing with departmental agencies, paperwork and medical issues.
Waalitj Kids focuses on providing engaging and educational mentoring support for primary school aged children. Mentors work with families to encourage children to attend school through facilitating morning pick-ups, access to a healthy breakfast, sports, education activities and rewards.

Better School Engagement
Working closely with parents, teachers and the wider community our mentors assist with:
- Talking to children and families about the importance of regular school attendance
- Celebrating and rewarding improved attendance
- Working with families where children are not attending school to find out why and what can be done to help them
- Providing practical support like driving children to school or helping to organise school lunches, uniforms, homework and after-school care
- Working with the school to monitor attendance and follow up on student absences
Wiluna based mentors engage other community members and services to work together to overcome any potential barriers that may prevent children from regularly attending school through organising rewards, mentor visits, sport and recreation activities, community events and supporting families with daily responsibilities.
