Hosted by the Waalitj Hub and Zagul Biri

Over the Horizon is an education and capability-building program designed to support Aboriginal businesses to prepare for and engage with opportunities in Australia’s Defence industry.

Delivered in partnership by Waalitj Foundation and Zagul Biri, the program brings together Waalitj’s community and employment networks with Zagul Biri’s Defence industry expertise and lived experience of Indigenous engagement in the sector.

Together, the two organisations provide participants with practical, culturally grounded guidance from people who understand both worlds. The program focuses on building practical understanding of Defence markets, procurement and commercial expectations. It provides structured education, one-to-one coaching, and facilitated engagement with Defence agencies and major contractors to help Aboriginal businesses become market and investment ready.

Join industry representatives, Defence sector partners, and Aboriginal businesses for an engaging event designed to build connections, increase understanding of Defence procurement, and identify pathways to participation in Defence supply chains.

Am I ready? Do I have a plan?

This workshop is free to attend for First Nations Peoples looking to start a business, or are needing a refresher in basic business concepts and planning.

This entry-level program is aimed at those who are thinking of starting a business but are not sure where to begin. All in all, this workshop is aimed to assist participants to explore and map their business idea and to provide practical steps towards business readiness along with connecting to a range of business supports and resources.

PART 1 – AM I READY

This session is designed to introduce participants to a range of pre-planning considerations prior to starting a business. The session comprises (4) initial steps towards start-up, including;

Step 1: What about my business idea?

Step 2: Have I got what it takes?

Step 3: Will it work?

Step 4: Do I have enough support?

PART 2 – DO I HAVE A PLAN?

In this section participants will be introduced to the planning process of their business. As with any plan, they’ll need to have some goals, objectives and justifications to base their plans on.

This workshop is free to attend for First Nations Peoples looking to start a business, or are needing a refresher in basic business concepts and planning.
