John Tonkin College (JTC) Deadly Sista Girlz mentors organised a camp on Wadjemup (Rottnest Island). On Wednesday morning at 9.am, students and mentors arrived on the deck to board the Rottnest express, excited for the journey across the sea.
One key stop was Oliver Hill, students and mentors made their way up the hillside to begin the second tour. This experience led them through underground tunnels carved into the sandy terrain, revealing the island’s wartime history with a tour inside the engine room and ammunition supply chambers. Then the bus dropped the students and mentors in town, and they went back to the accommodation.
The following day included a quiz for the girls following a cultural tour the mentors had created. They walked the along the cultural sites as Jemma (DSG mentor) explained the heavy history behind each place. These sites included the Aboriginal burial ground and Quod. The girls discussed the history and importance of site with their mentors before leaving the island.
Our DSG program holds engagement events, like the Rottnest camp, across the year for students to build connections.
