New Job Role for Dwayne

07 July 2026
Waalitj Foundation is providing community maintenance support in Laverton, thanks to jobs funded through the Remote Jobs and Economic Development (RJED) program. Participant Dwayne Barnes is now working in his new role, building new skills and gaining confidence.

When Dwayne joined the team earlier this year as a Supervisor in our Community Maintenance Initiative, he had no prior experience in machinery or reticulation but was willing to learn and keen to be upskilled.

He took part in irrigation training delivered as part of his involvement in our Remote Australia Employment Services (RAES). The training provided him with practical knowledge in irrigation design and installation, an understanding of current systems and products, and hands-on experience in operating and maintaining irrigation systems across different environments.

Now, Dwayne is able to apply these skills in his role and support local reticulation needs within the Laverton community. He has also completed earthmoving training, gaining tickets in skid steer, forklift, front-end loader and excavator operation. These qualifications have opened up new pathways for him, including future opportunities in the local mining and landscaping industries.

Through his role, Dwayne has contributed to projects that give back to his community, including building a yarning pit at Laverton School, upkeep of the Youth Centre garden, and general garden maintenance across town.

Supported by the National Indigenous Australians Agency, the RJED program assists income support recipients to move into paid employment through the creation of new jobs that support community priorities.
