After building skills and confidence through the Waalitj Foundation’s Remote Australia Employment Services (RAES) program, Brad has secured a role with the Shire of Leonora and is enjoying a rewarding new chapter in his career.
Originally from Fremantle, Brad moved to Leonora with his wife to be closer to her family after the loss of his own. After relocating, Brad connected with the Waalitj Foundation and joined the RAES Maintenance Crew, where he worked for three years developing new skills and confidence.
For Brad, the experience was more than a job. “It was like working with your family every day,” he said. “Everyone was good, everyone got along. Nothing too stressful, just good people. A family network.”
When Brad felt ready to explore new opportunities, the RAES team stepped in to support him. They helped him gain the certificates and confidence he needed to take the next step in his career.
The support paid off when Brad secured a role as a Yardy with the Shire of Leonora, a position that keeps him active and engaged. His days involve pruning overgrown trees, burning off green waste, and operating heavy machinery to load and transport materials to the tip. “I love it,” he said. “It’s great.”
The RAES program provides flexible, community focused employment services for job seekers in remote regions. Mentors work closely with participants to build skills, overcome barriers, and find meaningful pathways into work. For those not yet ready for employment, the program also offers opportunities to contribute to local community projects while building confidence and capability.
After years of hard work, Brad is now looking ahead to the next milestone: retirement. “I’ve got about ten years left – I’m not getting any younger!” he joked.
He also had some words of advice for job seekers in the region. “To anyone thinking about coming to Waalitj, I’d encourage you to do it. It’s a good environment and a great place to get your work balance. Everyone’s welcome. There is no judgment or hostility. It’s a good crew to work with and it’ll get you back into the workforce if you haven’t worked for a long time.”
The Remote Australia Employment Service (RAES) support job seekers in remote Australia to build their skills and address barriers to getting a job. The Waalitj Foundation is the RAES provider for the Yaaliku Region, covering Leonora, Laverton, Wiluna, Menzies, Mt Margaret and Mulga Queen. Find out more here.
