As part of NAIDOC week celebrations, our Deadly Sista Girlz played a Curtain Raiser match for the West Coast Eagles v GWS Giants match at Optus Stadium. After the game, they proudly formed a guard of honour as the AFL squad entered the field.
DSG schools united from different parts of WA, John Tonkin College, Fremantle College, Darling Range Sports College, Governor Stirling Senior High School, Thornlie Senior High School, Southern River College, Yule Brook College, Armadale Senior High School and Champion Bay Senior High School, to celebrate this momentous occasion.
Having shaken off the nerves and stretched out with some jumping, lunges, jogging and drills, the girls were ready to rumble! Splitting into two teams, the girls huddled amongst the field, generating a game plan for the win. Throughout the four quarters the girls demonstrated sportswomanship, cheering one another on from the side lines and working collaboratively as a team.
On the sound of the final siren, the White and Blue team won the game and proudly took home the victory. Although the match had ended, the fun continued! Students and mentors had the very special opportunity to form the guard of honour for the West Coast Eagles. Standing in line along the entrance of the field, they welcomed the Eagles onto the field. Following this, the students along with their friends and family , were welcomed to sit in a dedicated section to watch the game.
Deadly Sista Girlz Career Pathways Manager Alicia Janz touched on how significant it is being part of the match-day NAIDOC celebrations.
“We celebrate our identity and culture every day of the week, but it’s always heartwarming to have the wider community join in on celebrating our rich history and successes. Football is an inclusive sport and can bring people from all cultures and nations together,” Janz said.
“The excitement of getting to play at Optus Stadium in front of family, Eagles fans, and being on the ground with AFL players nearby gives players a bit of fire to show off their abilities. The players made the most of their opportunity and represented our community with strength and pride.”
“Hopefully, it’s the first step for our young Deadly Sista Girlz in their football journey, and they will be playing at Optus in the blue and gold jumper in the near future. Paving the way for the next generation of DSGs to follow in their footsteps.”
