Jumbo is a proud Wakka-Wakka, Bwgcolman, Birri-Gubba, Juru, Mamu man living and working in Cherbourg QLD.
Jumbo has been with our Indigenous Scholarship Program (ISP) since 2024 and has been an amazing role model in and around his community.
ISP is aimed at increasing the number of Indigenous Australians with tertiary and trade qualifications to enhance employment outcomes, with a specific focus in the resources sector. Each scholarship recipient is guided by an Individual Career Plan, which they establish with their mentor, ensuring they have all the support and tools required to reach their goals.
Jumbo’s ISP mentor, Taryn said “As one of Jumbo’s mentors I have witnessed pure determination to change the health care system for the better, one where he can help walk along side his clients assisting them and teaching them along the way.”
Jumbo is a family man who works hard not only with his studies but also his personal life, he has been coaching rugby league and involved in a lot in his community.
Jumbo’s ISP mentor Taryn spoke about his impact and leadership, “He is a great role model for the younger and older mob, and is always so understanding and approachable, giving his best to those who need it. His community is very lucky to have him!” she said.
Jumbo said “For me, I always try to give back and be inspiring and positive in everything I do, leading by example and helping people to learn new skills is rewarding in itself”
Jumbo is a strong and powerful man in his community, even when life has been tough, he finds the strength and determination to get things done. He knows all too well the struggles of mental health, and it pushes him to work harder so he can help the next person.
We have loved having Jumbo on the program and look forward to seeing him accomplish his goals!
