Joanne Palmer, a First Nations women and Waalitj Hub client, has officially low cost launched her new grocer business, Mumma Jo’s Grocers, offering cheap and affordable essentials to the Boulder community. Joanne has had a busy start to the year, working hard to get the store ready for the grand opening. You can read about the lead up to the launch here.
Joanne came to the Waalitj Hub in 2021 and has been supported by the business advisory service, through the in-house mentoring from our Business Coach based in the Goldfield Region, assisting with networking and industry connection to ensure the launch reached its full potential.
Waalitj Hub Business Coach, Bianca, has been collaborating with Joanne for over a year, advising her from start-up business plan concept throughout to the launch of her dream business. Joanne said she loved working with Bianca, “I’m loving it, I don’t work for anyone.“
Located on Burt Street in Kalgoorlie, Joanne created Mumma Jo’s Grocers to provide inexpensive food essentials for the community. Her passion is to deliver cheap and affordable food for people who are struggling to afford the essentials to live. “The shop is for everyone, I’ve got bread, milk, cheese, bacon, eggs, all the essentials that people need.”
A warm flow of support has poured for Joanne, with many family and friends visiting the store demonstrating support. Joanne’s daughter said, “I’m so proud of of my mum, she’s come so far these past 4 years!”
The official launch day attracted a swarm of new customers and gained attention in the community through social media pages and word of mouth.
Throughout Joanne’s business journey, her and Bianca pushed and fought to make her dream a reality. Bianca stated, “I have seen amazing dedication from Joanne, which has really highlighted that you need to be hard working, consistent and willing to push boundaries on all levels. It is also evident that Kalgoorlie needs strong cultural partnerships and I would like to see more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses get the recognition they deserve”
Well done to Joanne Palmer for successfully launching her dream business, we look forward to seeing Mumma Jo’s flourish in the near future! If you are in Kalgoorlie, pop into Mama Jo’s and say hi. Located on 18 Burt Street, you will find a range of affordable goods and positive community spirit!
