Onslow School came together to celebrate NAIDOC Week through a range of activities for students, families and the wider community.
As part of the Onslow Family Support Program, our Waalitj mentors joined Onslow School in celebrating NAIDOC Week. Our mentors ran a calico bag painting activity in each of the classes where students could tell their own stories through creative designs, incorporating their favourite colours, animals and patterns.
Throughout the week, mentors also spent time with older students, taking them out crabbing and fishing and providing opportunities to build connections, learn new skills and enjoy time together outside the classroom.
The team also assisted with a community NAIDOC cook-up hosted at Onslow School enjoyed by students and community members. The cook up coordinated by Onslow elder Irene, included kangaroo stew, kangaroo curry and damper.
To end the week we held an after school Auskick footy session. Mentors assisted in facilitating drills and joining in for a kick with the kids.
Also joining the trip were some special guests from Prok, AMCAP and Creative Cultures who were there to work alongside our team. As part of our fundraising efforts in 2025, the Foundation hosted a Gala Dinner where one of the auction items was the opportunity to work alongside Foundation mentors in one of our regional delivery locations. The aim of the experience is to provide guests with a firsthand look at the impact being made in our programs, as well as provide an enjoyable experience for the kids!
Our Onslow Family Support focuses on providing mentoring support for Onslow children. Mentors work with families to encourage children to attend school through facilitating morning pick-ups, access to a healthy breakfast, sports, education activities and rewards. Our Onslow Family Support Program is Supported by Mineral Resources, National Indigenous Australians Agency, Woodside Energy.
