“I’m extremely happy and it’s a rewarding job that I believe in. It’s something I’m passionate about and having that support from the Foundation was what got me there”, said Joel.
Joel joined Waalitj Foundation’s ReSet program with the goal to find full time employment in a meaningful position and was connected with ReSet Program Mentor, Rance Blackwood.
“I was a bit reluctant to ask for help…but Reset made me comfortable, and I liked my case worker Rance. They gave me lots of great support”, he said.
The ReSet program deliver holistic focused services that work closely with other providers using a throughcare model aimed at addressing individual barriers to employment that a person exiting the justice system may be facing.
Waalitj Foundation staff use existing employer networks to place clients into sustainable and culturally appropriate employment opportunities. “Waalitj would do these really great things where they would bring employers down to talk to a whole group of us”, he said.
With the ongoing support of his Mentor, Joel worked in a few different positions that expanded his skillset and resume. “It was really good that I had someone check in on me every fortnight”, he said.
With determination and hard work, Joel then transitioned into his current full-time role and a meaningful position.
In reflecting on his journey with the Foundation, Joel said “I look around at such an amazing organization and take full advantage of the support”.
