‘Going to Fit4Work helped me build confidence’ said Shelly.
Shelly is a proud Wagyl Kaip woman who grew up on Ballardong country in Northam.
Shelly joined our P242 program with the goal of finding the right job for her.
After being out of the workforce for six years due to her health, Shelly struggled with her confidence and felt uncertain about current industry expectations.
Shelly attended our Fit4work sessions regularly, ‘I gained lots, even if the employer wasn’t something I was interested in, I listened, and they still taught me, and I got to learn about what they did’ she said.
Our Fit 4 Work sessions incorporate presentations from potential employers and complimentary service providers, including health/mental health. They also cover career development and employability skills, like mock interviews and budgeting sessions. Our mentors deliver the weekly program and provide mentoring support for participants whilst also improving the health and wellbeing of attendees.
Shelly is now currently employed at Djinda Produce in their warehouse. Her role is to assist with picking, packing, labelling and checking orders for dispatch, ‘I look forward to going to work.’ she said.
Shelly shared that her favourite part of the job is how low-stress and straightforward it is. She enjoys the physical aspect of the work and feels fortunate to be surrounded by amazing colleagues.
Our employment mentors assist participants with building the confidence and capabilities needed to secure meaningful and sustainable employment. Our focus is on improving employability of Indigenous jobseekers through the development of foundation skills and work readiness.
Shelly reflected on her experience with our P242 program and offers advice, ‘Definitely attend, you’ll get a lot out of it, but you also have to put into it. They can’t do everything for you, they can suggest and present opportunities but you have to commit to it, put yourself forward and have some faith in yourself as well, and that grows if you attend every week.’
Plan 2day 4 2morrow (P242) is a pre-employment program assisting Indigenous job seekers in the Perth Metropolitan, Peel, and Goldfields regions of Western Australia.
We are proud to be delivering this program in multiple locations in partnership with the Alcoa Foundation and Shell. Find out more.
